Piper
John started learning the bagpipes in 1995 after being
involved with the Edinburgh military Tattoo with the Army
Cadet Force and being exposed to the pipes for 4 weeks. He
started learning the pipes on his 16th birthday in 1995 with
Kirkcaldy & District pipe band. This is where he was taught
his grounding with the bagpipes and spent the following 4
seasons competing in Grades 4 & 3. During this time he
also took his hand to composing.
He spent the next 5 seasons playing with Dysart & Dundonald
under the leadership of Brian Lamond, where the band quite
frequently featured in the top 6 at major championships.
Furthering his grade 1 experience he then joined the Vale
of Atholl and served 4 seasons under the leadership of Andy
Renwick. He had some great times with the band featuring in
the top 6 on many occassion and also had the privilege of
performing at the prestigious “pre-worlds concert”
in 2006 at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall.
When not working & playing with pipe bands back in Scotland,
he ran his business, Caledonia Pipers. This had created many
opportunities to travel the world playing at many various
events.
John is very excited about making the move to Perth to play
with WAPOL and hopes that his previous G1 experience can help
progress the development of the band.
